Hi kids! Lee Presson here, former guildmaster of Saint Blaise North. I just remembered something I wanted to share with you.

The criers guild as I ran it (1990-1998) was a respite from the sex and booze jokes that saturate fair. We were dedicated to chaos and non-sequiturs, so much so that we had our own latin motto: CIVITAS VACUUS PROVIDENTIA.

It means "citizenry without prudence."

Bill Harris

This posting is mostly for those of you who are now considered dinosaurs, specifically those who were at the last years of Black Point.

You probably remember Regina, almost everyone in faire had a crush on her, and you may remember her boyfriend Bill Harris. Bill and Regina split ways many years ago, but stayed very close.

Bill developed brain cancer, and in spite of getting it into remission, Bill died a couple of weeks ago.

Bill was a hellofa guy, my wife's personal attendant at faire, and an occasional crier.

take care and have fun, I miss you and all the criers I've had the honor to gig with.

Do you look around faire and see nothing but strangers? Have you felt alone in a sea of faces? Are you looking for a reason to reach out and meet new people? Buddy, you could use a R.U.B.!

R.U.B (Random Undisclosed Benefactor) is Secret Santa for everyone who works at the faire; booths, joust, guilds, crew, alestands, you name it. It's great, and it’s happening again this year at the Northern California Renaissance Faire. Many have known the joys of being RUBed, and now this joy can be yours!
~ Bring the customers into our world by asking them to deliver things for you!
~ Make new friends by interviewing your RUB's closest companions!
~ Fake out your friends!
~ Utilize people from faire you've never met before to help you out!
~ Practice slight of hand!
~ Give and get presents!

This is Fantastic! How Do I Sign-Up?
To be a part of the exciting world of the RUBs, we’ll need the following sent to: mongerweb @. yahoo .com :

Real Name:
Faire Name (if any):
Faire Affiliation:
E-mail:

The emails will only be used to contact you, should there be any problems. Your RUB will not have your e-mail, and we will not give it out to anyone. We are not accepting any applications after faire begins. The deadline is Thursday, September 6th, so sign-up now, and tell your friends to sign-up, too.

How does it work?
- On opening day packets of sealed envelopes will be delivered to each guild area, booth, etc. to be distributed to the people who signed up. Reveal your assigned person to no one. Spies are everywhere!

-MINIMUM once a weekend for the run of faire you must do something for your secret pal. Be it a singing telegram, a lollipop, flowers, a cool handmade thing, or something you bought at the 99 Cent store. If you really want to spend money, we set the cap at $15 max. per gift, but we really encourage people to have cheap, creative, personal gifts. It doesn’t have to have a lot of value, just selct things with care. In return, you will receive something from your RUB each week.

-As the RUBer, it is your job to discover things about your mark. Send them your own questionnaire the first weekend, perhaps along with a non-offensive gift, like a rock with a string around it. Everybody wants a rock to wind a piece of string around. :)

-If you know ahead of time that you won't be at faire on a particular weekend, either communicate this to your RUB pal the weekend before, or have a trusted friend make a delivery for you. You would not want your RUB to think they are being neglected. If you couldn’t relay the message beforehand, make it up to your mark the following weekend. If you cannot be reliable, please don’t sign up.

-On closing weekend of faire you get to reveal yourself to your secret pal.

What Rub Is Not:
- This is not an occasion to flake out! You volunteered for this yourself. Please don't set some nice person up for disappointment. After all someone's sending you a gift. A list is kept of who is assigned to whom, and heads will roll if you're naughty... or you'll at least get a stern talking to. You won't like it. Trust us.

- This is not intended to be an acceptable form of a freaky stalker love connection. There is a fine line between flattering and creepy. Do not make your RUB buddy anticipate your messengers with dread.

This is an activity set up by participants for participants. The powers that be at the faire are not affiliated with this in any way.

Thank you!
-Diana Kaufmann

Here I am, actuallyadmitting to missing people. I miss you guys. I miss being a crier. I miss all of the criers. It's funny because I don't usually miss people, but I miss you all. I went to Dickens this year to see how I might or might not like it, and I liked it less than Ren Faire. Don't getme wrong, I enjoyed Dickens, I was in NFP and I worked at Cuthbert's Tea Shoppe, but I miss the easy friendliness of Ren Faire! I miss how it was pkay to hug someone in the streets! Of course, maybe this year's Dickens was interrupted and disturbed by what happened with my brother on Thanksgiving. But i still prefer Ren Faire. And I can't wait till the next one. when is it by the way?

A request from your once and future patron to help Leland -

Hi everyone! I've missed you all since the last fair at Vacaville, but let me introduce myself to those of you who don't know me. In '85 the court guild was asked to appoint patrons to all of the other guilds, in an effort to improve guild relationships. Everyone in the guild laughed when I asked for the criers, and I got you guys.

I remained the patron until the last year at Vacaville, with the exception of 3 years, 90-92. I was the guy that the northern guild would mob hug during Mayor's parade, among other times.

That said, here's the problem. Due to a lot of issues, many involving the activities around Leland and Leslie's divorce, Leland has virtually nothing of his mother to remember her by. So here's the request - if you have any photos with Audrey in them, any at all, please scan them and send them to me. I am working with a non-faire friend of his to create a memory album of his mom.

Leland's hanging in there, and it looks like Lee Presson and the Nails are slowly starting to increase their gigging, perhaps they'll even get together again.

So once more, I'm glad I get to see you all again, and please send what you can to my email address at philip-at-mchsi-dot-com.

With love and fond memories,
Philip Tuley
aka Sir Henry Hastings, the Earl of Huntingdon
aka Sir Thomas (Bucky) Sackville, Baron of Buckhurst
aka Sir Thomas Bedingfield, Queen's Bullyboy and chief assassin.

Since the last attempt at this got way out of hand, let's try again.

Are the Crier's doing Folsom Faire?

If so, WHEN is Folsom Faire?

And, last but not least, who will be going if the Criers are doing FF?

please, let's not rant of other things on this topic. If you want to rant start another topic for it.

I just saw Erik on the Discovery channel. On some show called "MythBusters." It seems that they were doing something about arrows splitting arrows. They filmed it at Tulare.

So when did they film this? There is a good shot of Erik laughing about something there. Was anyone else there when they filmed this? (Obviously... I kinda recognized a few other people there too.)

Calling all Crier Pics

This is an unofficial call for Town Crier photos (Erik will probably send out an official one later), but I need photos...group photos, single photos, parade photos....no...not those kinds of photos...well ok...those too. Specifically photos of the Town Criers from any year, the higher the resolution/quality, the better.

The easiest way for you to get me photos is through my ftp site. E-mail me at hexadamsel@hexadamsel.com and I will forward you my ftp information.

If you prefer another way of transfer (ex. us post, hand deliver, etc) let me know and we can try to arrange something.

I would prefer original files. The files downloaded from Tribe and similar communities are lo-res and pixilate easily.

Please indicate if you would like to receive credit for your photos. I will be unable to give credit to individual photos, but your name and website can be added to our photographers list.

If you have any questions or comments please let me know.

Hope to see your pictures soon!!

Just out of curiosity, and complete lack of me communicating with the world outside work and home, what is the next crier gig? I know we are in the midst of winter, but if I know soon enough I may be able to come back this season. .....Maybe.

Have we heard anything yet?
